DECARBOMILE

EU Horizon Project

DECARBOMILE - DECARBONIZE THE LAST MILE LOGISTICS

The EU project DECARBOMILE aims to trigger an unprecedented improvement of the green last mile logistics in Europe. Gathering 31 partners from 10 different countries, the solutions developed in DECARBOMILE will demonstrate the full potential of decarbonised last mile logistics in four living labs, under which The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and 4 satellite cities.

Project period: 1st September 2022 – 31st August 2026 (4 years)

Funding programme: Horizon Europe, ID: 101069806, under the topic: HORIZON-CL5-2021-D6-01: Safe, Resilient Transport and Smart Mobility services for passengers and goods

Project budget: € 9.562.521,25/ funded by EU: € 7.963.993,63

Project focus:

The aim is to develop improved delivery methods, tools and methodologies, and implement and test them across Europe to lower carbonisation of last mile logistics activities. Delivery methods such as (micro) urban consolidation centres, the use of cargo bikes or waterways and electric barges for transport will be integrated with a collaborative urban consolidation logistics framework including ICT and IoT tools.

The project consortium consists of 31 partners from 10 different countries.

The role of Logistics Initiative Hamburg is to support the collaboration and exchange between the partners and stakeholders analysing conditions and requirements and methods, and to disseminate to stakeholders and our network. We will be working especially on the living lab Hamburg’s use case.

In four living labs (in Logroño - Spain, Nantes - France, Hamburg - Germany and Istanbul - Turkey) and four satellites (Tallinn - Estonia, Getafe - Spain, Ghent - Belgium and Sarajevo - Bosnia and Herzegovina) existing delivery methods will be strongly improved with urban consolidation centres, micro urban consolidation centres including smart lockers, innovations on cargo bikes and how they can be used with load pooling for instance, electric barge and more. The goal is to use and improve existing solutions and allow their interoperability and modularity to improve their efficiency and use their complementarity.

To be successful in its implementation, DECARBOMILE will build upon all previous results from other projects and rely on developed methodologies to implement the new solutions and delivery methods in collaboration with all relevant local stakeholders, based on their needs and behaviours. The relation with and between stakeholders will be facilitated by the creation of a collaborative urban consolidation logistics framework that will include a digital platform, methodologies for collaboration, and ICT and IoT tools. This common framework, along with tailored innovative business models and recommendations on local policies, will allow for a strong collaboration during the project and allow to learn more about the end-users’ needs and behaviours.

The project is not yet completed. Project work status and results are regularly publishedon the official project website and social media channel.
