About the Logistics Initiative Hamburg

A network for the future

With more than 550 member companies and institutions from the Hamburg metropolitan region and beyond, the public-private partnership is the largest location network in the logistics industry in Europe. Our network consists logistics service providers, industry & trade, research & development, start-ups, numerous public institutions and industry-related companies.

Together with our partners, we are the first point of contact for all questions concerning the logistics-related economy. As a catalyst, initiator and manager of (innovation-) projects at regional, national and international level, we create benefit for the entire logistics industry and the logistics location Hamburg. We identify relevant issues at an early stage, coordinate the initialization of projects and mobilize our members to implement successful joint activities.

As a public-private partnership, we promote the positioning of the Hamburg Metropolitan Region as a trend-setting innovative logistics region in Europe until 2025.

Through our activities, we support logistics-related companies and institutions and facilitate the transfer of knowledge between business, science, politics and administration. Our network forms the important foundation for our work. Together with our members, we activate cooperation and innovation. Whether global player, SME or start-up, systematically we drive innovative solutions and the development of measures and projects along the entire supply chain.

With these goals in mind, we have aligned our strategy. Under the guidelines "Innovation and Value Creation" and "Network and Cooperation" we work in the three fields of action "Intelligent Infrastructure and Land Use", "Human Resources and Qualification" and "Sustainability". These form our thematic priorities for projects, events and services.

In order to further expand Hamburg's role as the leading logistics metropolis in Northern Europe, the then Ministry of Economic and Labour Affairs and the Hamburg business community launched the Logistics Initiative Hamburg in 2006.

In 2017, well over ten years after the founding of the Logistics Initiative Hamburg, the Ministry of Economics and Innovation (BWI) entrusted the Institute for Innovation and Technology in the VDI/VDE Innovation + Technik GmbH with the evaluation of the Logistics Initiative Hamburg. As part of this evaluation, a further strategic development of the initiative was elaborated in a participatory process with the members, committees, partners and institutions as well as the LIHH office.

Building on this, LIHH has been operating in a new structure since 2018 and is consistently developing from a competence network to a forge for the future.

You can find the report on the evaluation and strategic development here (GERMAN).

Since 2013, the logistics cluster holds the awarded of the EU's GOLD label. The "Cluster Management Excellence Label GOLD - Proven for Cluster Excellence" of the European Cluster Excellence Initiative honors cluster organizations that demonstrate highly developed cluster management and are committed to further improving their organizational structures and processes in the sense of even higher performance for the benefit of the cluster players. Currently, LIHH is the only logistics cluster in Germany to be awarded the GOLD label.
